As Foreign Minister since 2006, helped establish good relations with other countries in ASEAN and beyond.

As Minister for Trade and Industry (1999-2006), negotiated Free Trade Agreements with US, Japan, India, Australia and other countries. Involved in restructuring our economy, expanded economic space abroad, pushed development of Biopolis, initiated IR projects, renewed Sentosa.

As Minister for Health (1995-1997), promoted Traditional Chinese Medicine, introduced Advance Medical Directive, upgraded healthcare facilities.

As Minister for Information and the Arts (1989-2007), promoted arts and heritage. Established National Arts Council. Oversaw building of Esplanade, new National Library, Asian Civilizations Museum, Singapore Art Museum. Restructured MediaCorp and opened up film and broadcast industry.
